Pozzotive^® 250 transforms post-consumer glass collected in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary into a high-performance, lower-carbon material for both CT DOT and MTA rail projects

BEACON FALLS, Conn., Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Recycled glass collected from all 50 states is getting a new life in Connecticut infrastructure as part of the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s rail capital improvement program in the Bridgeport-Stratford corridor and in New York as part of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Metro-North Harlem Line, Southeast Station and Brewster Yards.

The glass from around the country was  transformed into Pozzotive^® 250, a high-performance, lower-carbon ground-glass pozzolan manufactured by Urban Mining CT in Beacon Falls. Developed in recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Pozzotive^® 250 demonstrates how a familiar waste material can be repurposed into a resource for the next generation of American infrastructure.

The CT DOT rail capital improvement program’s adoption of Pozzotive^® highlights how state agencies, contractors, ready-mix producers, and local manufacturers can work together to advance circular, resilient, and climate forward infrastructure solutions. The project brings together CT DOT as project sponsor, Yonkers Contracting as contractor, O&G Industries as the ready-mix concrete producer and Urban Mining CT as the manufacturer of Pozzotive^® 250.

MTA Construction & Development and Metro-North Railroad have planned multi-phased improvements at Metro-North’s Brewster Campus in Putnam County. The Brewster Yard Improvements program will transform the campus into a strategic maintenance facility and transportation hub. The current campus includes Southeast station, customer surface parking lots, the Harlem Line tracks, the existing train storage yard and the Brewster Yard maintenance facility. Byram Concrete is the ready-mix concrete producer incorporating Pozzotive^®250 in this project.

Pozzotive^® is a supplementary cementitious material that can replace up to 50% of traditional cement in concrete. Made from post-consumer recycled glass, it reduces the carbon footprint associated with the cement it replaces while improving concrete durability and helping keep glass out of landfills.
