NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation) is proud to announce that Edward Klaris, Esq. has joined NAM’s award-winning panel of neutrals as a Hearing Officer. He is available to arbitrate and mediate cases in New York and federal matters throughout the United States.
Mr. Klaris brings more than three decades of experience handling media, entertainment, intellectual property, technology, privacy, artificial intelligence, and complex commercial matters. He has advised media companies, technology businesses, content creators, filmmakers, publishers, executives, and other rights holders on copyright, trademark, trade secrets, licensing, content clearance, chain of title, underlying rights, newsgathering, defamation, data and personal privacy, advertising, digital distribution, and emerging technologies, and has negotiated licensing and sales agreements and structured transactions involving intellectual property assets. He has led his own private practice since 2015.
Before founding his practice, Mr. Klaris spent 17 years in senior in-house legal and business roles at major media organizations, including General Counsel and Senior Vice President, Editorial Assets & Rights at Condé Nast and Condé Nast Entertainment, General Counsel at The New Yorker, and Media Counsel at ABC, Inc. In these roles, he managed litigation and intellectual property portfolios, prepublication and prebroadcast review, newsroom and editorial matters, commercial transactions, licensing, digital products, and international business operations, and defended First Amendment and intellectual property claims. He has also represented clients as counsel in domestic and international arbitration and mediation proceedings.
Since 2005, Mr. Klaris has served as a Lecturer-in-Law at Columbia Law School, where he teaches a seminar in Media Law covering copyright, trademark, privacy, newsgathering, free speech, and digital publishing. His combined experience as a litigator, in-house counsel, business executive, educator, and arbitration advocate gives him a balanced and informed perspective on the commercial, technological, reputational, and practical considerations affecting the parties in a dispute.
“Ed Klaris brings a rare depth of experience at the intersection of media, technology, and intellectual property law, at exactly the moment those disputes are growing more complex,” said Mark Haddad, CEO of NAM. “His years as in-house counsel to some of the country’s leading media companies, combined with his work as an advocate, educator, and arbitrator, make him an outstanding addition to NAM’s panel.”
“I am honored to join NAM’s panel of neutrals,” said Mr. Klaris. “Having represented and advised media, entertainment, and technology clients for more than thirty years, I understand how important it is to have neutrals who bring real subject-matter depth to these disputes, and I look forward to bringing that experience to NAM’s clients.”
Mr. Klaris has been recognized as a Legal Legend by The Hollywood Reporter (2026) and named to Variety’s Legal Impact Report: Hollywood’s Top Entertainment Attorneys (2026). He has also been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Entertainment Law – Motion Pictures and Television and Litigation – Intellectual Property, and ranked by Chambers for Media and Entertainment: Advisory. He received his J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and his B.A. from Vassar College.
